Yanagi released an ant in the confined area and followed closely behind with a crayon, tracing the ant's movements. He did this for 15-20 minute intervals, after which he and the ant collected themselves for their next foray. Finally, the ant was placed back where he was and the tracing resumes. The process can take days...

Making art with living systems
“MEART – the Semi Living Artist” is bio-cybernetic research and development project. MEART is a geographically detached artist that is distributed between two locations in the world. Its “brain” consists of cultured nerve cells that grow in a neuro-engineering lab, in Atlanta. Its “body” is a robotic drawing arm that is capable of producing two-dimensional drawings. The “brain” and the “body”
communicate in real time with each other for the duration of an exhibition.
Invented systems
Sol Le Witt (created step-by-step instructions, some sort of algorithm to be followed by an assistant)
John Cage (systems based on chance)
André Masson. (Automatic writing, 1924)
Surrealism (automatism)
Hamish Fulton (records his walking)
Spirograph
Gemma Smith, Untitled, 2002. (She drew lines with a texta until it ran out)
